Today, the Nissan Canada Foundation announced its plans for another busy season helping build homes for Habitat for Humanity partner families nationwide. The Nissan Canada Foundation hopes to reach beyond 5,840 volunteer hours in 2015, which would represent two years of donated time, using an eight-hour day framework. With 21 volunteers donating their time at this year’s Habitat ‘Adopt-a-Day’ season opener last month, and numerous ‘Adopt-a-Day’ events already planned in communities like Harrington, PEI; Kentville, NS and Winnipeg, MB, reaching this goal is already well underway.
The Nissan Canada Foundation’s ‘Adopt-a-Day’ events allow it to make a tangible difference by helping Habitat for Humanity to build safe, decent and affordable homes for local families, which helps break the cycle of poverty through home ownership. This year, members of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers organization will be in attendance at the ‘Adopt-a-Day’ in Winnipeg on September 9, where they will join forces with Nissan employees and local dealership staff for an entire day to build a new home for a family in need. This donated labour is vital to Habitat for Humanity and their ability to build homes as economically as possible.
Since the partnership with the Nissan Canada Foundation began in 2008, 817 Nissan Canada Inc. and dealership staff have volunteered more than 5,550 hours of time to help build homes in cities across the country, including Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal, Saint John and Halifax. This contribution of time is over and above the more than $1-million the Nissan Canada Foundation has donated to Habitat for Humanity Canada and its affiliates.
“With Habitat, Nissan has a broader platform through which we can support the communities where our customers, dealers and employees live, carrying out our corporate vision to enrich people’s lives,” said Christian Meunier, president of Nissan Canada. “And as Habitat volunteers, our employees can engage directly in addressing local needs for affordable housing by making personal commitments of their time and effort on Habitat home builds.”
Current plans will have Nissan employees volunteering to support construction or revitalization projects in the following cities this year, with more still being planned:
